Highway to Hell, Norway is a mixed media installation, garage-rock dreamscape, public access TV opera, and custom interactive technologies. It mixes the rough DIY aesthetics of 'underground' culture (whatever that still means), and fuses them with interactive technologies. A five-part opera libretto turned into various video episodes. Screened daily on small CRTs. A hacked Kinect camera will allow viewers to modulate the video in unpredictable ways, using motion sensing. For the musical component, recorded album in two days on a single reel of 2" analog tape. Songs, interludes, and experiments. The compositions are equally indebted to Guided by Voices, Laurie Anderson, Robert Ashley, and the aesthetics of 90s DIY cassette culture. As part of the installation, reconstructed the Personal Injury Lawyer Organ, a custom MIDI keyboard, wherein each of the 61 keys triggers a video clip of certain ubiquitous local personal injury lawyers. Intriguing to San Antonio residents will be San Antonio Rock Peace, a conceptual gesture of peace in a world seemingly gone mad. For Rock Peace, took rocks from home, painted peace signs on them, and placed them around the city in the shape of a peace sign.

Recorded with a small ensemble at Abbey Road studio 3, additional overdubs in Oakland. The album featured a special website to generate variations of the album based on about 200 remixes I made.Each time the page loads, a specific, never to be repeated version is generated. I also made an album-length video, showing me walking from San Francisco Bay to Death Valley, where I bury my daughter Ingrid's placenta (yes, really).

In a state of rage and disgust after listening to the national news, I kind of snapped and decided on a symbolic and futile gesture: write a postcard to every UN ambassador (all 192), plus our president and the mayors of several prominent cities, and let them know that music is the universal language and represents the best way forward for humanity in this idiotic age we now inhabit. It took awhile. There were many countries I’d never even heard of. Two days later, I mailed what I consider to be a dose of levity and common sense to the inevitable recycling bin in the corner of every UN ambassadors office. I don’t care. I believe in symbolic, pointless gestures. They reaffirm my humanity and confuse the machine. They purge my hopelessness. The project was featured in a special segment on NPR
